In our pursuit of fitness, sometimes we need something other than our personal motivation to get out the door. One thing that has been effective for many folks is to commit to an organized fitness event.
Committing to your workout buddy, co-workers or a scheduled event keeps you "honest" in completing the goal.
I have used my grown daughters to help me keep on track with my goals. Two years ago, I committed to my San Diego daughter to train for and run the San Diego Marathon. That was good for keeping me on track for six months! My San Francisco daughter and I have run the Bay to Breakers for many years, and I have now committed to my Ohio daughter to train for and run the half- marathon at the Columbus Marathon in October. Committing to these fitness events have not only kept me lacing up my shoes and getting out the door, it has also helped me stay bonded to my grown up daughters, creating new memories together.
There are myriad local events that are available to all levels of fitness. The Sierra Trailblazers have been the catalyst to organize annually 12 local walking and running events that benefit local charities.
So far this year, six have already been completed with the next event being the first annual Run for Friendship on Saturday August 16, benefiting The Friendship Club. If you are interested in knowing more about this event, contact shawnr@friendshipclub.org. The neat thing is that these events are open to both walkers and runners and are very friendly and welcoming.
On September 14 is the annual Barbara Schmidt Millar Triathlon. This event is in its 14th year and is open to women of all ages. I have attended 11 of them and I have to tell you that it is one of the best Nevada County fitness events offered. You can compete as an individual or team and I have seen all levels of fitness entered.
It seems that oftentimes people will either be afraid of commitment or are not sure how to get started. The first thing to do is get on the phone and talk to your local fitness facility or knowledgeable friend. If they don't know the answer to your questions, I bet they will know someone for you to call. The only failure is if you talk the talk and not the walk!
So what is the prize? Getting in shape. Meeting other people with like interests. Participating in community events that benefit local non-profits. Being a positive role model. Earning the coveted sponsor T-shirt to wear around town to show others that you participated.
So, Keep your eye on the prize and get involved and get in shape!
