The Grass Valley Historical Commission is receiving the Citizen of the Year Award this year from the Nevada County Historical Society.
The five-member commission will be honored at a special award luncheon Aug. 2 at the Grass Valley Methodist Church.
"We're getting this award because we are starting a process to put a preservation ordinance in effect in Grass Valley and for our work recognizing heritage homes every year for the past decade," said commission Chairwoman Gwynn Waldsmith. She has been a member of the commission since 2003, she added.
The commission works with Grass Valley's Community Development Department to identify historical properties in the city and honor property owners who've maintained or restored these properties, said commission member Peggy Levine.
Every year, the commission recognizes five homes in Grass Valley as heritage homes, Waldsmith said.
"We're really happy for this honor," said Waldsmith about the Citizen of the Year Award. "We are all volunteers, and it's nice to be recognized for our hard work."

The commission has made "some outstanding progress over the last few years," said Laura Todd, a commission member and a Grass Valley native.
"We're about to have our first historical resources survey conducted for the City of Grass Valley," Todd said. "Another achievement of ours is the identification of the 1872 Townsite as a historical study area. We'll also be publishing a book about the 10th anniversary of our heritage home awards program."
The Grass Valley Historical Commission meets once a month at Grass Valley City Hall, Levine said.
The Nevada County Historical Society board meets every month at the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum in Nevada City, said June Rice, with the Searls Historical Library.
