The inaugural Youth Bike Fest, hosted by Youth Bicyclists of Nevada County (YBONC) Foundation was held this past Saturday night at Seaman's Lodge, Pioneer Park, Nevada City.
The silent action and dinner raised valuable funds for local youth cycling programs to promote good health and fitness.
The event was a great opportunity for the community to meet several pro cyclist in town for the NC Classic bike race.
Rising pro star Scott Nydam of the BMC Team and current King of the Mountains of the Tour of California participated as a keynote speaker.
"It's great to arrive early in Nevada County and get a glimpse of the cycling community," said Nydam. "There are many people here who are passionate about cycling and its value. The success of both YBONC Foundation and the 48th edition of the NC Classic is a testament to this community support of cycling."
Other guest speakers included Justin Swett and Paul Zarubin, both team members of the NorthStar Mountain Bike Team, and Matt Cooke, a member of the HealthNet Pro Race Team. Each speaker shared the value cycling has made in their lives.

One of the evening's highlights was when two members of the Nevada Union High School Mountain Bike Team grabbed the microphone.
Nate Byrom, a junior at NU, shared the fun he's had riding and racing all over the country. Byrom is currently in Colorado Springs, Colo. attending a junior development camp at the US Olympic Training Center.
Christine Weir, the NorCal Hich School league varsity champion, shared some of the more lighthearted aspects of the cycling life, such as "getting to wear lycra" and since cycling is a male dominated sport, "getting to hang out with all the boys!"
Local speakers included Bill Haire of Nevada County Land Trust, who reminded everyone to be a courteous cyclist while enjoying the county's vast array of trails with fellow hikers, and horse back riders.

Laura McAndrew, an intern with Nevada County Public Health, and there on behalf of Living Healthy Nevada County, presented the growing trend of teen and adult obesity in our country.
McAndrew's emphasized the value of physical activity, 30 minutes, 3-4 times a week and eating healthy snack and meals. She said to avoid products known to cause weight gain, and known causes to today's teens health illnesses of tomorrow.
Steve Davis, director for Bicycle Recycle Program of Sevenhills Middle School, also displayed his new mobile bike repair shop van.
