David Stanley Jones died May 15 after a five year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 57.
Friends and family will gather at 6 p.m., Saturday, May 24, at the Windmill Ridge Winery, 8350 West Linne Road in Tracy, to celebrate his life.
Mr. Jones was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Grass Valley. He earned a bachelor's of science from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and his teaching credential from Chico State University. For most of his 24 year teaching career he taught Agricultural Science, which reflected his love of horticulture and plant sciences. He was a Science Specialist for the Milpitas Unified School District for four years before his retirement. He will be sorely missed by his students, who often told him he was their favorite teacher. He had a passionate love of playing his banjo and reaching out to the old-time banjo-playing community, attending gatherings and workshops and supporting the endeavors of the Stairwell Sisters, a San Francisco based old-time bluegrass band.
Mr. Jones was a 10 year resident of Tracy and a member of the Sunrise Rotary Club and the Modesto Classic Thunderbird Club.
Mr. Jones is survived by his wife of 13 years, Susan O'Hara-Jones; son, Lucas Jones; daughter and son-in-law, Lenore and Bob Heimbuch; stepchildren Adrien Del Bonta, Antonie Del Bonta and Michael Maroney, Eireann Del Bonta and Eric Smith; grandchildren Kaya and Caelan Heimbuch and Fineas and Ciaran Del Bonta-Smith; sisters Ruth Yurong and her husband Bill and Debbie Fratella and her husband Ray; brother, Matt Jones and his wife Bonnie; nieces and nephews and his father, H. Stanley Jones and his wife Ellen.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Florence Jones.
