5 questions with.... Jasmine McGown, Bear River softball

Whether or not she and her teammates come home with a second-straight section championship this weekend, Bear River senior Jasmine McGown is savoring what she said will likely be the final games of her softball career. In between games on Friday, The Union Sports Editor Brian Hamilton caught up with McGown to throw five questions to the center fielder:

When did you get started in this game?
“I was 61⁄2 years old. I believe it was because my uncle was coaching a Little League team with my dad and they asked if I would play and try something new.”

How do you like center field?
“You’re the captain of the outfield. You’re able to really help out the left fielder and the right fielder. And there are a lot of balls that get hit out there, too.”

You seem to take some pride in being one of the best No. 9 hitters in the area (.282, 15 RBIs, 7 2Bs), don’t you?
“It’s nice being able to hit ninth, where a lot of times I’m starting us off. It’s always nice to hit, but anywhere in the lineup is fine with me.”

What are your plans for after graduation?
“I’m going to Chico (to study business, perhaps accounting). People have been telling me to walk on. Cosumnes (River College) and Sierra (College) wanted me, but I think this is going to be my last year.”

What’s it been like being a part of this historic two-year run for the Bruins (who had posted a two-year, 56-5 record entering Saturday’s championship game)?
“It’s something you can always look back at. The girls I’m playing with, we’ve all been playing together for a long time. To accomplish something like all of this ... they’re just great memories to have.”
