Candidates Horne, Logue duke it out

The gloves are off in the 3rd District California Assembly race.

Nevada County Supervisor Sue Horne and Yuba County Supervisor Dan Logue are calling each other "liars" - the dreaded L-word - as the campaign for the Republican nomination enters the 12th round.

The June 3 primary will eliminate one of the contenders, leaving the other to face the Democratic nominee in November.

The candidates have turned an already-hot campaign into a boxing match, shipping the Marquis of Queensbury rules to Palookaville following a punchy mailer sent out by Horne to voters last week.

In her "Warning to Voters," Horne focused on the case of Yuba County farmers Tom and Jeanette Rice, who contend Logue helped grab five prime aces of their land through eminent domain while he was a member of the Three Rivers Levee Improvement Authority.

"Supervisor Dan Logue and his cronies stole our land ... He wouldn't listen. He just voted to steal our farm," the Rices are quoted as saying on the front of the mailer.

Tom Rice told The Union Thursday he agreed to let Horne put out the mailer and approved it for accuracy.

The mailer pushed Logue to issue a searing press release Monday entitled, "Horne gets into gutter," in which he said the Rices were pleased to get $155,000 for their property. "The land was not stolen," Logue said in the statement issued this week.

Censure votes held

Logue also demanded an apology from Horne, but he'll likely have to wait longer than Muhammad Ali was heavyweight champion.

"Mr. Logue basically lied in his press release," Horne said Thursday. "The Rices are very unhappy about how they were treated by Mr. Logue and the taking of their property."

Logue swung back.

"Everything in that piece was an absolute, bald-faced lie," Logue responded Thursday. "It's like the Clintons are running Sue Horne's campaign and I don't know where it's going to end."

The Yuba County supervisor said the Rices got $155,000 for their acreage - "twice what the land is worth." He said the Rices were also "on the record saying they're 'pleased.'"

"I was pleased to save the farm, but it's like saying I'm pleased I was mugged and only lost $20," Rice said. Like a young Mike Tyson, the levee district officials "ran roughshod over everybody," he said.

The farmer said he bought the acreage specifically for its special soil to grow apricots, peaches and nectarines.

The Rice family spent $60,000 on lawyers in the battle to save their land.

"But it's not about the money," Rice said. "I just want to keep farming."

He understood the land was taken for a levee to make the area safe from floods, but the $155,000 the levee district placed in an escrow account for it was insufficient, the farmer and architect said. Other south Yuba County neighbors have received offers of $70,000 per acre for their land from developers, Rice said.

"Logue and his group tried to take so much of our property that we could not have continued to farm," Rice said in Horne's press release entitled, "Dirty Dan Logue caught in lies about eminent domain seizure."

"The deception here is beneath the citizens of the Third District," Logue said in an interview. "I'm not attacking her personal life. I'm running on my record."

The Yuba County Republican Party officially censured Horne for her mailer Thursday, according to Logue's press spokesman Jim Nygren.

The Nevada County Republican Central Committee voted 8 to 4 against censuring Horne Wednesday night on the same issue, according to GOP member and Logue supporter Wade Freedle.
