Fundraiser to send Nevada County hydrologist to Uganda

Print Comment
A champagne brunch and silent auction will take place at 10:30 a.m. June 8 at the Odd Fellow’s Hall in Nevada City to support the local Rotaract club’s water and sanitation project in Uganda.

The event aims to raise $4,000 to send Sol Henson, a Rotaract member and local hydrologist, to Uganda to implement the project, Yolanda Cookson, president of the Rotaract Club said.

Rotary International has already approved a $175,000 grant to help Henson fund the project. But the grant won’t cover Henson’s travel and living expenses in Uganda for a year.

Henson will work with Dr. Scott Kellermann, a Nevada City physician who founded a health clinic in Uganda for Batwa Pygmies.

Henson has a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and a master's in hydrology from the University of California, Davis. He works for Friends of Deer Creek, a local nonprofit that monitors the water quality of Deer Creek.

Tickets to the event cost $45 per person. Besides the brunch and live auction, guests will enjoy live music and a slideshow about the water crisis in Uganda.

For tickets or more information, contact Sandra Auerbach at 575-1456.
