Bear River's varsity baseball team tallied off four runs in the first inning and held on to beat Manteca 5-2 in the first round of the Division IV Sac-Joaquin Section Playoffs in Sacramento.
Vince Viola pitched a complete game in which he threw eight strikeouts, walked four batters and gave up only two hits as Bear River advances to face East Union Saturday back in Sacramento.
The Bruins, on the other hand, scattered seven hits on the day. Stephan Hilton had a big hit in the first inning before Viola hit a ball into the gap, scoring two in the first inning, coach Mike Viola said.
Brendan Casey doubled down the right field line to score two more in the first inning. Chad Smith had a base hit to score Austin French in the fourth inning, to round out the Bruins' scoring.
