It all started at Hot August Nights in Reno. Gary Anderson was living in the Bay Area at the time and met Roamin Angel Ed Johnson there. Ed told him of the high number of rods and classics in the Grass Valley/Nevada City area and the Roamin Angels Car Club. When he and wife Glenda decided to move from the Bay Area, they checked it out. They moved here and one of the first things Gary did was join the Roamin Angels. It was the first time he had ever joined a car club, but has found good friends like Ed Johnson there. Although he already had a '65 Mustang, Gary was inspired by all the classics in the area to get something older. After talking with some club members, he opted for a Model A. Two and a half years ago he found one that had been restored twenty- five years ago and used very little since. It was a '29 Ford Tudor (two-door sedan) that was very stock. The only obvious change was that the generator had been replaced by an alternator for more dependability. The paint, upholstery and mechanics were all in excellent condition. Gary drove it back from Elk Grove on the freeway, a real white-knuckler. He found that it might do 55 MPH. Downhill. With a strong tailwind. Otherwise, 40 MPH was about the max. With the original suspension and mechanical brakes, that was enough. Ed named the Model A after hearing Gary's description of hanging tight to the steering wheel on curves to keep from sliding off the seat: Eileen (pronounced "I lean"). Still, he and Glenda do enjoy taking it out cruising locally, trying to do so at least once a week. After all, Eileen fits in very well in historic Nevada County.
