Cal State, UC to raise fees again under budget crunch

Print Comment
BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - The cost of a 4-year college education went up again in California today as leaders of the UC and Cal State systems approved their sixth round of student fee hikes in seven years.

The systems are under orders from Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to reduce campus spending to help make up a statewide budget deficit. The two boards say they had to ask students and their families to shoulder some of the burden come fall.

Cal State trustees meeting in Long Beach voted 15 to 3 to raise yearly undergraduate fees by $276, or 10%.

UC board members in Los Angeles tentatively approved a 7.4% fee increase.
