ELKS HELP Vets

Members of the Nevada City Elks Lodge No. 518 have been doing what they can to support our military veterans and their families. Most recently, they held a clothing drive, collecting socks, T-shirts, underwear and handkerchiefs, which they delivered to patients at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Reno, Nev.

Thanks to everyone who donated these much-needed items!

Youth Dance this weekend

More from the Elks, this from the Grass Valley Lodge.

Seeing the need for healthy recreation opportunities for local kids, the Elks, last October, started Venture 21, a coed organization for youth ages 14 to 21. It's part of the Boy Scouts of America (the Elks also sponsor scouting groups).

"Since then, we've gone backpacking in Yosemite, sailing at Point Reyes, shooting, climbing, snowboarding and cycling," says Jim Bowen, one of the organizers.

On Friday, Venture 21 will be holding a dance!

The Masquerade Ball is for youth ages 14 to 18 who want to get dressed up (they're calling for formal dress - woo-hoo! - and school dress codes apply, spaghetti straps are O.K.).

It's from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday at the GV Elks on the corner of West Main and South School streets in downtown Grass Valley.

Tickets are $8 with a costume and $10 without. Photographs and soft drinks will be available at an additional charge. Bring your student ID card - it's required to get in. And no freaking, Jim says. (They don't like freaks.)

The proceeds go toward funding more activities for the program, Jim adds.

NU Class of '58 reunion

Yes, it's been 50 years for the class of 1958, and Nevada Union High School grads from that year are gathering for the historic anniversary the weekend of Sept. 12-14. Organizers still are finalizing plans and will let us know the details.

In the meantime, Marilyn Kuebler, one of the organizers, is asking for help locating some of the classmates to be sure they can come. If you know the whereabouts of any of the following people, contact Marilyn at kueblertravel@verizon.net or (541) 347-3949.

The missing classmates are:

Leila V. Anderson; Ronald Lynn Anderson, Victor Brodie; John Grady Campbell; William Keith Cannon; Everette James Davis; Gail Anne Gardner; Adrienne Gresham; Ronald Wesley Holt; Daniel Kinch; Dorothy Jean Marshall; Gerald Robert Matthews; Wesley A. Moore; Michael Earl Rasmussen; George Henry Schofield; Warren Earl Scribner; Almond West; Patricia Irene Witchell.
