A "bathroom raising" is scheduled in downtown Nevada City as the metamorphosis of Beryl Robinson Plaza continues.
On Saturday, members of the Downtown Business Association plan to install the walls and ceilings for two public bathrooms in the emerging town square along Union Street.
Downtown Association Chairman Jim McConnaughay said the raising of the walls will occur around 10 a.m.
Members of Nevada City's City Council, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Lion's Club and Masons, all groups that have contributed a total of $9,000 to the project, have been invited.
McConnaughay said the men's and women's bathrooms will be made of stainless steel, have sinks and changing tables, and an automatic locking system for night-time security.
"We're excited that we're going to have a nice new public bathroom for tourists and local residents alike," he said.
In the past year, the plaza has taken shape while contractor Gary Tintle built a two-story brick building on the site of a vacant gas station that sat unoccupied for years.
As part of mitigation agreement with the city, Tintle Inc. cleaned and paved the lot in front of the Chamber of Commerce building. The Nevada City contractor and co-chair of the Downtown Business Association's Beautification Committee also had his firm pour the foundation and install the plumbing for the bathrooms.
On Saturday, Tintle will oversee the bathroom raising and other tasks, including painting the bathrooms and cleaning planters throughout the plaza.
The bathrooms will be located behind the pelton wheel in the part of the plaza that faces Highway 49.
McConnaughay said the goal is to have the bathrooms entirely outfitted and ready for public use by June 15.
Nevada City has two other public bathrooms on Commercial and Nevada streets.
