David McKay's journey into the world of self-publishing is paying some immediate dividends.
The Nevada City businessman and City Council member recently won four awards for "Yuba Seasons," an 85-page hardcover book that is packed with McKay's color photographs from his years of photographing a 39-mile stretch of the South Fork Yuba River.
"It was amazing," McKay said of the awards ceremony in Sacramento. "It was like I was at the Academy Awards."
The awards were presented April 25 by the Northern California Publishers and Authors, an alliance of independent presses and writers.
"Yuba Seasons" represents McKay's first venture into self-publishing. Since October, he has sold 500 copies of the book, which costs $39.95.
McKay, who owns Mountain Images Press, said he got the idea of self-publishing after a particularly successful show at the BriarPatch Co-op in Grass Valley.
"So I started thinking this could be a book," he said.
After working with Dirk Dusharme, a friend in the publishing business in Chico, he found a Web site with a publishing template that he liked.
He began work on the book in September; a month later, he had 30 copies that were sold out at one of his studio tours. Another 160 people ordered the book.
Since the initial publishing costs were fairly steep, McKay found a print broker in the Midwest who worked with a press in China, which so far has printed 1,500 books for him. He also had help from Caylen Balmain, a Grass Valley graphic designer who helped with the second version of the book.
The book has a forward written by "Nature Noir" author Jordan Fisher Smith, and McKay's photography notes come at the end. In between, readers will see the four seasons of the South Yuba, but in no particular order.
"When you turn the pages," McKay said, "there's always a surprise, and the flow of the book just fascinates people."
The book also grabbed the attention of judges with Northern California Publishers and Authors. McKay earned awards for Best Nature Photography Book, Best Interior Photos/Photo Layout, Best Exterior Hard Cover and the silver medal for Best Book in the author category.
He has had little time to revel in his success: Life is busier than ever.
"Publishing a book and distributing it is a full-time business," said McKay. Nevertheless, he already is making plans for a second book.
