It's a new lap record
Miners open section trials with new school record, All-American time in medley relay

The Sac-Joaquin Section swim trial got off to fast start for Nevada Union's varsity boys right out of the gate Friday at Tokay High School in Lodi.

Zach Humphries, Nicholas Ingersoll, Mike Saturnino and Elitt Golnik swam the fastest 200-yard individual medley relay in NUHS history, clocking a time of 1 minute, 38.72 seconds to earn the top seed for the section finals and All-American honors.

"That was a good way to start," said NU coach John Sultan. "That kind of got the ball rolling for us."

The Miners followed by sending their other two relay teams into the finals. Humphries and Golnik teamed up with Eric Wurster and Gabriel Ingersoll for fifth place in the 400 freestyle relay (3:19.91), while Gabriel Ingersoll, Jason Cobbe, Mason Martinez and Saturnino swam to seventh in the 200 free relay (1:32.39).

Those performances put the Miners in the thick of team competition - offering NU three opportunities for double points in comparison to individual events - for today's finals. Sultan said Jesuit, Rio Americano, Granite Bay and his Miners currently rank among the top four teams heading into the finals and consolations.

"Overall, it was a really good day," he said. "I think we're in good position to reach our goal of being in the top three or four."

Individual finals qualifiers include Humphries, who swam to fourth place in the 100 backstroke (53.45). Nick Ingersoll was fourth fastest in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.61), while Saturnino was sixth in the 100 butterfly (53.25).

On the girls side, NU junior Haley Porter was the lone qualifier for the finals, swimming the fourth fastest time in the 100 free (53.05). Porter also took ninth in the 50 free, in which she won a section title as a sophomore.

Swimming in the consolation round will be: Wurster, who took 10th in the 500 free (4:51.39); Golnik, who was 11th in the 50 free (22.44) and 16th in the 100 free (49.72); Martinez, who was 15th in the 200 IM (2:04.49) - a new frosh/soph record at NU - and Gabriel Ingersoll, who was 15th in the 200 free (1:48.74).

In Frosh/Soph events, NU's Trey Herbert took third in the 50 free (22.82), while Joey Thompson finished sixth in the 100 butterfly (57.06) and eighth in the 200 IM (2:08.69).

Sierra Kleiber qualified for the Frosh/Soph finals in the 100 freestyle and the consolation in the 50 free, while teammate Maria Giuliani will swim the consolations in both the 200 and 500 freestyle events.
