After surviving a late rally by Pioneer Valley League rival Colfax, the Bear River's Kelly Shepard struck out the Falcons' final batter to give the Bruins' softball team a 6-5 win with the tying run left on the bag.
The win gave Bear River its first 12-0 PVL season in the history of the school's softball team, coach Duane Zauner said.
Shepard did her part, striking out eight Colfax batters while allowing two walks, four hits and three earned runs.
The Bruins totaled 11 hits to build an early 6-0 lead against Colfax. The team scored four runs in the fourth inning and two runs in the fifth. Jasmine McGown batted 2-for-3 with two doubles for the Bruins. Kathryn Rabak batted 2-for-3 with two-run home run and added 3 RBIs.
Jennifer Wermes went 2-for-4 on the day while Courtney Ceo, Tera Reason and Brooke Mosman each added base hits to the cause.
Bear River (25-2, 12-0 PVL) will be the No. 1 seed representing the PVL in the Division IV Sac-Joaquin Section, says Zauner, playing in Stockton next Wednesday against the No. 3 Valley Oak League team.
Section tournament games will start at 5 p.m. at Arnaiz Stadium in Stockton with the second round following immediately in the evening at 7 p.m.
Track & Field
Bruins march to league finals
Bear River's track team got a shot in the arm Wednesday at the PVL league trials, just two days ahead of the league finals.
Jared Murnan, who finished second in the 200-meter dash on Saturday in Nevada Union's Invite, took first in the same event with the top time of all three heats (23.11). Along with a strong performance from freshman Carly Corripo, who ran a league record 1:00.08 in the 400-meter dash Wednesday, led a group of Bruins who will advance to the finals.
Corripo, who has topped out at 59 seconds before, has not gotten a time slower than one minute, Bear River coach Chris Davis said.
"She hasn't done more than 60 seconds all season long," Davis said. "It wasn't even her fastest time."
Brooke Van Fossen placed fourth in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (50.01) to advance while freshman Zach Weltz made it to the finals in the junior varsity category by winning the 110-meter high hurdles and long jumping 18 feet, 7 inches.
Chase Duncan, a senior, finished fifth in the shot put (42 feet, 11 inches) to advance as well.
Baseball
Greg Heauser had five hits but the Miners lost to Oakmont Wednesday, 4-3.
NU totaled 10 hits on the game but left 15 on the bags in a disappointing loss.
Kevin Wirick batted 2-for-5 with a double while Broughan Jantz batted 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Robbie Porter contributed two RBIs.
"We played good defense, had good pitching and hit the heck out of the ball, but we just couldn't get the runs," NU coach Ted White said.
NU (8-17, 5-13 SFL) finishes the season against Placer today at 6:30 p.m. at Raley Field.
JV: Nevada Union 5, Oakmont 4
The Miners junior varsity baseball team won their last game in a nail-biter, beating visiting Oakmont 5-4 in eight innings.
Both teams battled back-and-forth until the sixth inning when the game was tied at 4.
In the eighth inning, with two outs and runners on first and second, Matt Blesio blooped a single into short right-center, scoring Jordan Smith in a walkoff single.
Alec Giron pitched in relief for 5 1/3 innings, totalling six strikeouts en route to the win.
The Miners finish the year 14-9 overall and 10-8 in the Sierra Foothill League.
Frosh: Nevada Union 15, Oakmont 5
Trevor Gandell had three hits and the Miners beat Oakmont 15-5 in the team's last game of the season.
It was a great way to finish the season, NU coach Rich Osborne said.
Richi Osborne, Kevin Mass, Andrew Smith and Kyle Hoyt had two hits each. Matt Eccarius, Tyler Lyckberg and Caleb Sheridan had one hit each.
