Nevada Union's four seniors had a big night in their final game on their home floor Tuesday, as the Miners rolled to their 41st victory of the season with a three-game sweep of visiting Placer.
NU took the match 25-15, 25-18 and 25-13, thanks largely to the play of Alex Bernadette, Nick Cancilla, Stu Chapman and Austin Schumacher on Senior Night.
Schumacher hammered home 11 kills and two service aces, while Cancilla added 10 kills and four aces. Bernadette had five kills and two aces, while Chapman totaled 4 kills and two aces.
The win moved the Miners to 41-7 overall and 16-1 in the Sierra Foothill League.
"I don't know what our other teams have done in the past, but (the win total) would have to be right up there with the best of them. It probably is the most wins, but I'd have to check to confirm that."
NU has only Thursday's match at Del Oro standing between the Miners and an outright league championship.
Soccer
Forest Lake Christian 1, Vacaville Christian 1
The Falcons finally took firm hold of the Central Valley Christian League championship Tuesday, tying rival Vacaville Christian 1-1.
The Falcons got their lone goal 12 minutes into the second half, when despite being kicked in the left knee Logan Burke back-kicked the ball with her heel, while she was going down, to teammate Jessica Raskin for the score.
Morghan Pomeroy had five saves in goal on the opposite end of the pitch, including a diving one-hander she slapped harmlessly away.
The win clinched the CVCL crown for the Falcons, who finished the league with an 11-1-3 record.
"I think we started off a little rocky at the beginning of the year ... trying to figure out where everybody played best," said FLC coach Alane Burke. "The caliber of girls we have ... we have a fantastic defense and a fantastic offense ... they just needed to trust each other. And I think they've done that very well."
The Falcons will host their first round playoff match Tuesday, although an opponent has yet to be determined.
Golf
Falcons fall short of section berths
Three Forest Lake Christian golfers competed in the Division VI section meet Tuesday at Castle Oaks Golf Club in Ione.
Johnny Umamoto totaled a 76 to lead FLC, falling one stroke short of qualifying for the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters meet.
Travis Stokes had a 92, while Austin Rosen did not finish the competition.
Softball
JV: Nevada Union 5, Roseville 3
Karly Harris picked up the win, throwing all seven innings while allowing three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts, as the NU junior varsity team downed Roseville 5-3 in the season finale.
Brianna Nicholson went 4-for-4, while Akasha Dykes, Michelle Yates, Harris, Stacia Mack and Caitlin Paulus each had a hit. Yates doubled in the win, while Paulus pushed across a run with an RBI single.
The Miners finished 15-7 overall and 7-5 in the SFL.
