12:01 a.m. PT May 7, 2008

Joe R. Griffin died peacefully May 3 at his home after an extended illness. He was 73.

A celebration of life will be held from 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday, May 17, at Sierra Mountain Aviation at the Nevada County Air Park. Bring a memory and a finger-food dish to share. In accordance with his wishes, his remains have been donated to UC Davis Medical School for Huntington's disease research.

Mr. Griffin was born Nov. 4, 1934, in Oklahoma and moved to California during the dust bowl migration in the mid 1930s. He graduated from Placer High School in 1953. He married his beloved wife, Fran, in November 1956. He served in the California National Guard.

Mr. Griffin worked at DeWitt State Hospital until its closure in 1971. He moved his family to Cedar Ridge and worked for Nevada County Animal Control. He worked his way up to director of Animal Control before deciding to go back to working in the field of mental health. He retired from Placer County Mental Health in 1990.

Mr. Griffin enjoyed flying his Cherokee 140, hanging out with his friends and fellow pilots at the Nevada County Airport, target shooting, and ammo reloading.

He will be deeply missed.

Mr. Griffin is survived by his loving wife, Fran; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Jeanne; daughters and sons-in-law Christine and Eric Peterson and Trish and Jerry Funk; grandchildren Celestial Dover, Samantha Griffin and Rachel and Zachary Mabey; sister, Patricia Jonas of Sacramento, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ann Rigby.
