Peace Center Film Forum is devoting Monday evening to Cuba with a film,"The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil," and a slideshow by Mark Toelkes. He recently visited the island, where he stayed in a private home and experienced life in a socialist country firsthand.
The film tells about how Cuba was challenged to create a low-energy society and feed its people when it lost access to Soviet oil in the early 1990s.
Cubans share how they transitioned from large, fossil-fuel intensive farming to small, less energy-intensive organic farms and urban gardens, and from a highly industrial society to a more sustainable one.
The message of the film is that through cooperation, conservation and community, Cubans ultimately triumphed. And as the world approaches "peak oil," Cuba's transition may help give others options and hope.
Viewers may stay for a facilitated discussion following the film and slideshow.
The screening is at Peace Center of Nevada County, located at the Center for the Arts Annex, upstairs, 316 W. Main St., Grass Valley, 7:30 p.m. Admission is $4 - $10 donation (no one turned away for lack of funds).
