Warrant sweep launched

Sheriff's office on the tracks of 698 residents

If there's a warrant out for your arrest, the Nevada County Sheriff's Office will be looking for you today in a county-wide warrant sweep, sheriff's officials said.

The Sheriff's Office has released a list of 698 Nevada County residents with outstanding warrants, all of whom will be sought at their homes, workplaces and other places they have been known to go, said Nevada County Sheriff's Capt. Ron Smith.

The last county-wide sweep was in March 2006 and resulted in 85 arrests, 65 self-surrenders and 13 citations, sheriff's officials reported.

In addition to the sheriff's office, other law enforcement agencies and the Probation Department will dedicate resources to today's sweep, Sheriff Keith Royal said.

Warrant arrests will include people who have failed to appear in court, people for whom bench warrants have been issued, and people who are wanted for failing to complete DUI or drug-related programs and have violated their probation, Royal said.

People who want to clear their arrest warrants "with the least amount of difficulty" may turn themselves in at Wayne Brown Correctional Facility any time, at the courthouse in Nevada City during business hours, or between 7 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. Tuesday through Friday on the courthouse steps, Royal said.

Royal encouraged the public to call the sheriff's warrant unit at 265-1473 with any information regarding the whereabouts of people with warrants.
