Western Nevada County will have one representative teeing off at next week's Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament, after Nevada Union junior Spencer Biersdorff shot a one-under-par 71 to take third place at the Division II Tournament at Wild Horse Gold Club in Davis Monday.

"I had a feeling that might happen," said NU coach Hank Davidson. "And if anybody was going to do it, it was going to be him."

Biersdorff was one of three underclassmen to tee off for the Miners in the divisional round Monday, promising more low rounds for Davidson in years to come. Adam Grizzell, a freshman, followed Biersdorff with a 77 while senior Travis Callison shot a 79. Junior Zak Leonard shot an 81, as did seniors Rich Benevento and Tyler Knight.

As a team, the Miners totaled a 389 for fourth place, in a tournament that saw two other Sierra Foothill League squads finish among the top five. Christian Brothers claimed first place with a 365, while Oak Ridge was second with a 369. SFL power Rocklin finished third with a 378, while Granite Bay was fifth behind the Miners with a 396.

"Shooting 389 is a pretty good score," said Davidson. "It's just unfortunate - but actually fortunate for our section - that there were such strong scores (Monday).

"We missed third place by 11 strokes and that's nothing to be ashamed of. We had a really fine year for this team."

Biersdorff will join the best of the section next week at Stevinson Ranch Golf Club, near Turlock. Fourteen teams and 27 individual qualifiers will tee off in the competition, which is set for a 1 p.m. shotgun start.

Division IVBruins take third place

With just one team qualifying for the section Masters meet, Bear River's golfers fell two spots short of moving onto the next round at Greenhorn Creek in Angels Camp.

The Bruins, who finished third with a 427 behind first-place Colfax (406) and second-place Sonora (420), were led by Niall Conn and Taylor Daniels, who each shot 80.

The cut for individual qualifers, which needed a playoff to resolve, was 78.

"Overall, I think we did alright," said Bear River coach Gayne Nakano. "Last year we came in fifth in our league and this year we were third in the divisional round. So it's quite an improvement."

Greg Remillard had an 87 for Bear River, while Hayden Lavelle and Eddie Millington each shot 90. Anthony Ertola rounded out scoring with a 100.

JV: Nevada Union 223, Granite Bay 225

Cody Keogh carded a two-over par 38 to lead the Miners junior varsity team to a win over previously unbeaten Granite Bay (17-1) at Alta Sierra Country Club Monday.

Eric Babin had a 41, while James Ray and Cody Brzezinski each totaled 47 and Scott Britten finished with a 50.

"It was very exciting," said NU coach Marshall Barnes. "That was the last dual match of the year and they were undefeated - until today."

Baseball

Nevada Union 5, Oakmont 2

Robbie Porter led the Miners on the mound and at the plate Monday, as NU scored a 5-2 Sierra Foothill League win over Oakmont.

Porter scattered five hits and allowed two runs, while striking out one and walking three. He also had a 2-for-4 day at the plate.

Will Havard went 3-for-3 hitting with a double, while Dalton Covert had a 2-for-3 day with a double.

"We got pretty good pitching and we actually fundamentally played real well," said NU coach Ted White. "We laid down two bunts and executed a first-and-third situation to score. And we only had one error today."

NU also got strong outings from Travis Custer and Greg Heauser in relief, each allowing one hit in a combined three innings of work.

Nevada Union (8-16 overall, 5-12 SFL) travels to Oakmont Wednesday, followed by a game with Placer at the Sacramento River Cats' Raley Field at 6 p.m. Thursday.

JV: Nevada Union 9, Oakmont 5

Matt Blesio had a 3-for-3 day at the plate with 3 RBIs and two walks, leading Nevada Union over Oakmont 9-5 in SFL junior varsity baseball action.

Rollie Brodka went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and 2 RBIs, while Alec Giron was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Glenn Hogan struck out one, walked two and hit two batters in one and one-third innings of work. Jordan Smith came on in relief, striking out six and allowing two hits and three walks the rest of the way.

NU (13-9 overall, 9-8 SFL) hosts Oakmont Wednesday.

Soccer

Colfax 3, Bear River 2

The Bear River varsity girls soccer team finished their season with a tough 3-2 loss to Colfax Monday.

The Lady Bruins came out strong, surprising Colfax by scoring their first goal just three minutes into the game when Whitney Smith dribbled down the left side sending a cross to Shea Glaspey who found the back of the net.

Just two minutes later, the duo of Glaspey and Smith reversed the trick when Shea passed the ball up to Whitney who dribbled around the last defender and took the shot bringing the score to 2-0 just five minutes into the game.

Five minutes later, Colfax found luck when the line judge called a handball against Bear River in the box, setting the Falcons up with a successful penalty kick.

Bear River continued to dominate, taking three more shots on goal to Colfax's two, ending the first half with Bear River leading 2-1.

Thirteen minutes into the second half, though, Colfax was able to capitalize on a corner kick tying up the game at 2-2. At the 20-minute mark, the Falcons found the back of the net once again, squeezing past the Lady Bruins for a final score of 3-2.
