Alumni Notebook: NU alum takes fourth in tournament

12:01 a.m. PT May 5, 2008

Here's a look at how some athletes with local ties fared recently at the college level:

Wrestling

Luke Manuel (Nevada Union, '06); Purdue University - Purdue freshman wrestler Luke Manuel posted an outstanding performance at last weekend's FILA Junior Freestyle National Championships last weekend, hosted in Las Vegas, Nev. The Boilermaker rookie took fourth in the 163-pound division with a record of 5-2 for the tournament.

Manuel placed in five-of-six tournaments for the Old Gold and Black in his rookie campaign, winning the Jim Fox Open and NWCA National Open, taking home third at the Big Ten Championships and falling one win shy of placing and All-America status at the 2008 NCAA Championships. At 165 pounds he finished 29-9 for the year and was voted a team captain for the 2008-09 season.

Other national competitors included sophomores Nick Bertucci and Colton Salazar and freshman Akif Eren. Bertucci and Salazar competed in the Senior Men's Freestyle National Championships, both grappling at 163 pounds as well. Bertucci finished 1-2 for the tournament, while Salazar went 3-2. Eren wrestled in the 132.25-pound FILA Junior National Freestyle division, advancing to the quarterfinals with back-to-back wins to start the tournament before bowing out.

"It was a solid weekend on the whole," said Purdue assistant coach Tom Erikson. "All of our guys got some great experience competing at a high level and everyone managed to pick up at least one win."
