Springtime in Lake Wildwood is beautiful. There seems to be color bursting into bloom everywhere.
Up at the clubhouse, the colorful dogwoods and azaleas combine with the sound of running water to create a wonderful welcome.
Speaking of the clubhouse, "Steel Magnolias" just wrapped up their nine-show run in the Cedar Room. Thank you to the cast for a first-rate performance and to the crew for a memorable production!
The 51st Annual Penn Valley Rodeo is here. Wild, Wild West Week begins Saturday, and the free rodeo kick-off event is May 14 at the rodeo grounds. Main events are Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 16-18.
I spoke with Doc Halstead, president of the Rodeo Association and a longtime PV resident, and he assures me that the animals are healthy and well-cared-for and that everyone will have a good time.
For more information about the rodeo and tickets, contact the Penn Valley Chamber of Commerce at 432-1802.
If you like swing dancing, the Nevada City Rotary is sponsoring a Party Hearty dance with Jimmi Accardi & the Wildcats at the Miners Foundry on May 16. All proceeds will go to Women of Worth to help families escaping abuse. (In the interest of full disclosure, I help with both groups.)
There will be fun, food, music, dancing, door prizes, and a raffle and silent auction. Advance tickets are $20 and are available in PV at Larry and Lena's Pizza in their new location across from the Tack Room.
Pamela Biery, an LWW resident, writer and communications specialist, has just finished overseeing the design and printing of a new, free Nevada City Tree Tour Guide featuring 42 trees in downtown Nevada City.
On May 20 at 5:30 p.m., you can get a copy of the guide and take the walking tour with certified arborist and guide creator Ellen Soloman, and consulting arborist and contributor, Randy Frizzell. The community event is free and will leave from the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce.
Maybe we can get Pamela to coordinate a similar tree tour guide for LWW!
A dedicated group of ladies, including many from LWW, are busy working on the 8th Annual Friends of Hospice Butterfly Garden up at Hooper and Weaver in Nevada City.
The "garden" will be open over Memorial Day weekend, May 24-26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The big butterflies go up on May 9 and you will be able to see them from Highway 49.
There is still time to order a remembrance card in honor of a loved one at the hospice office, Hooper and Weaver, B&C Hardware or Weiss Bros. Nursery. A $15 donation is requested for each card.
The card with your personal message will be laminated and attached with a ribbon to a colorful butterfly sculpture. This has proven to be a very healing ritual as guests wander the butterfly-filled garden searching for the remembrance card they created.
