Nevada City police are looking for a thief who took nine brand-new unassembled bicycles still in their boxes from a locked storage container at Seven Hills School.
The BMX style bicycles worth $1,142 were donated by the Police Department for a program at the school that teaches children to assemble and fix bikes.
So far, police have no leads.
"It's sad when people steal from kids," said police Sgt. Dan Badour.
Police believe the bikes were stolen sometime between 4:45 p.m. Thursday and 3:30 p.m. Friday.
Six green, two black and one white DK brand "step up" model BMX freestyle bikes were stolen, according to a flier from the police.
"They were brand new. They are somewhat distinctive because they weren't even put together," Badour said.
Anyone with information can contact the Nevada City Police Department at 265-2626.
"This would be considered grand theft, a felony. They could go to prison," Badour said.
