Feeling affluent? County ranks 18th in median income
Print Comment
Nevada County ranks 18th in the state in median income and 22nd when joint tax returns are calculated, according to a report released by the California Franchise Tax Board.

According to 2006 tax returns, the median income in the county is $37,468 for individuals and $63,941 for those who file joint tax returns.

Like the state as a whole, Nevada County has seen a steady increase in income since 1999, when the median income was $29,950 for individuals and $51,192 for those who filed joint tax returns.

In that year, the county ranked 17th and 22nd respectively among the state's 58 counties in declared income.

Gil Mathew, president of the Nevada County Economic Resource Council, said Thursday he was not surprised to see what he called a gradual increase in income. The increases reflect typical cost-of-living increases of around 4 percent per year, he said.

Even entry-level and service jobs pay in the county typically pay more than the minimum wage, which increased to $7.75 an hour earlier this year, Mathew said.

"We just had an adjustment of the minimum wage, and you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who received a pay raise," he said.

Placer County a rich neighbor

From 1999 to 2006, the statewide median income climbed from $29,376 for individuals and $54,770 for joint returns to $35,390 and $66,810, respectively.

Marin County had the richest incomes in the state, with a median of $51,720 for individuals and $116,626 for joint returns.

Imperial County had the poorest income, ranking last at $23,557 for individual and $37,582 for joint returns.

Theresa Gregg of the California's Franchise Tax Board said the figures show the state workers' incomes continue to grow at a steady pace.

"So far, for the most part, we are seeing increases in income all across the state," Gregg said. Returns reflect adjusted gross income, which means capital gains exclusions such as certain home sales are not figured into the totals.

Among Nevada County's neighbors, Placer County ranked sixth in both categories for 2006, with income medians of $44,034 for individual and $78,652 for joint returns.

Yuba County, meanwhile, ranked 41st and 47th respectively, with income medians of $30,240 for individual and $48,605 for joint returns.
