Big Earth Day celebration Saturday

This is the 18th year of the Earth Day celebration that takes place at upper Loma Rica Ranch in Grass Valley. This year the event, scheduled for Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., is not only bigger, it's greener. No trash cans will be in sight says organizer Beth Moore. Recycling bins, yes, plenty of those, but trash cans are out. Zero waste is the theme, so picnickers are asked to bring their own dishes and utensils.

This free day-long event includes eco displays, local artisans, non-profit and Earth-friendly business vendors, crafts for kids, music and food and drink

Performers are Haute Trash, Perry Mills Project, The Strum Bums, Kimberly Bass, Little Shady Band, Then Again, The Shreds, Jay Tausig, Outta' Hand, Bud Beebe and Grease, Grit and Grime. Saul Rayo, Ray Darby and John Olmstead, among others, will speak.

A high point of the day is everything pertaining to bike power. The Alliance for People Powered Transportation (APPT) is not only planning a 10:30 a.m. group ride to the event, a bike clinic and bike parades but also give-aways: helmets and even a bike. And the "bike-powered-blender" smoothies are not to be missed. Find out more at www.bicyclenevadacounty.com.

A great way to come to the event is via bus. Go to www.goldcountrystage.com for details.

Many organizations and people are working to make this event something to remember. Call Moore at 274-0360 or go online at www.foothillmedia.org for more information.

The address for the event is Lake MacBoyle at upper Loma Rica Ranch, 12190 Loma Rica Drive, Grass Valley (1st left on Loma Rica Drive).
