Two Bear River teachers laid off

District slashing $1.75M from budget

Board members of the Nevada Joint Union High School District finalized the layoffs of two Bear River High School teachers at a special board meeting Wednesday at the high school district office.

They did not lay off an English teacher, a social studies instructor and a counselor at Nevada Union High School who all had received layoff notices earlier, said Trisha Dellis, assistant superintendent in charge of personnel and student services.

Board members also finalized the layoffs of two part-time employees at the NU and Bear River cafeterias as the facilities are being restructured, Dellis said.

In addition, the high school district will not replace a retiring teacher's aide at the Juvenile Hall, Dellis said.

The district is cutting $1.75 million from next year's budget to deal with statewide cuts proposed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is trying to make up for an expected deficit. That deficit, earlier projected to be $14 billion, could balloon to $20 billion by July, he said recently

Though the teachers are being laid off due to budget cuts, the termination of two part-time cafeteria employees isn't related to the cash crunch, Dellis said.

Board members also approved the trips that the Odyssey of the Mind and Destination Imagination teams from Bear River High School will make to the University of Maryland at College Park and to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville respectively in May.
