Hungry heroes to help out hospice

Grass Valley Mayor Mark Johnson, Deer Creek School principal Susan Barry and Iraqi war veteran Noah Bailey will be among 13 heroes who will raise money Saturday night for the new Hospice of the Foothills in-patient center.

The local heroes have agreed to let guests bid on eating a four-course dinner with them on May 3 at Quail Ridge in Grass Valley - the same venue as Saturday night's event.

The staff at Quail Ridge, an assisted living center, recently decided to hold this first-ever fundraiser for the hospice, Marketing Director Kristen Jenkins said.

"We wanted to give something back to the hospice," Jenkins said Wednesday. "It has been a wonderful place for our clients and community." All proceeds will go to the hospice project.

Hospice of the Foothills is building a new center and campus on Rough and Ready Highway west of Grass Valley. It is now located at 12399 Nevada City Highway, Grass Valley.

Some heroes will give additional gifts to the the highest bidders, she added.

Nancy Broz, a second-grade teacher at Nevada City Elementary School, is making a box of chocolates for her high bidder.

Kathy Eldredge, a Sierra College professor and photographer, plans to make a photo part of her prize.

Telestream chief executive Dan Castles and The Union publisher Jeff Ackerman plan to take their winning bidders to lunch, as well as to dinner.

Bailey might have the most interesting stories to share with his dinner companion. The Nevada Union graduate and high school athlete lost both his legs after being wounded in Iraq.

The other heroes are Dennis Fournier, executive director of Hospice of the Foothills; Ken Hardin, artistic director for Twin Cities Concert Association; Julie Lukela, a Girl Scouts service unit director; Dr. Brad Miller, physician at Hospice of the Foothills; and Dr. Holger Rasmussen, retired physician and member of Friends of Hospice.
