Forest Service opens

Foresthill OHV trails

Off-highway vehicle enthusiasts can again enjoy the designated trails and roads in the Sugar Pine area of Foresthill in Placer County, which have reopened due to recent drying and warming weather, Tahoe National Forest officials said.

While the trails are being reopened, people using them should be aware that forest thinning and fuel reduction operations could be scheduled within the area again this year. Thinning activities include felling trees, so to protect public safety, some trails could again be closed temporarily.

Contact the American River Ranger District at (530) 367-2224 or view the TNF Web site at www.fs.fed.us/r5/tahoe/ for more information.

Residents asked to join West Nile virus battle

To combat West Nile virus during the mosquito season, Nevada County residents are being asked to empty dog dishes and buckets, shake puddles out of tarpaulins, drain flowerpot saucers and bird baths, clear out clogged rain gutters and eliminate other little places where mosquitos lay their eggs.

In addition, property owners with ponds can get free mosquito fish from noon to 2 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at the Nevada County Fairgrounds near the Draft Horse Monument, beginning May 8.

Stagnant water, no matter how small, gives the disease-carrying insects a place to breed, county Department of Public Health officials said this week.

Residents also should check screens and repair holes where mosquitoes can get into the house.

People can help monitor the spread of the virus by reporting dead birds and squirrels to the state's West Nile virus Dead Animal Surveillance Program. The program takes reports of dead animals and arranges for the animals to be picked up and tested.

The statewide number to report dead animals is 877-968-2473 or online at www.westnile.ca.gov.
