Spiritual musical comedy portrays Death

12:01 a.m. PT Apr 24, 2008

What would happen if Death Himself decided he wanted to change the nature of the whole Death business? What if he was tired of the whole sordid mess?

Well, Dorothy Truth, Douglass Truth's mysterious twin sister, tells the story of how she, a normal middle-aged lady, helped Death Himself become the world's greatest salesman. The first and only worker of Death Inc., Ms. Truth, is helping to bring about a surprising transformation in the until-now totally grim Death business.

"I'm looking for ways to make the death experience less frightening, more user-friendly and ultimately highly profitable in terms of galactic balance of payment issues," she said.

Truth's play, his first, is in effect a traveling infomercial for Death Inc., designed to both test new marketing strategies and to educate consumers, he said. Though Death is still mandatory, Truth contends there are exciting new options and upgrades in the works, saying, "You can't cheat Death, but you can work with him."

Performing since 1996, Truth attributes part of his success to another local artist, Menlo Macfarlane: "Menlo has been a huge help to me in developing out my ideas into an actual performance. The audiences I've had have also been very helpful. They're excited by the premise and amused by my singing."

Also an author and a painter, Truth is represented by galleries nationwide, including the Mowen Solinksy Gallery in Nevada City and was commissioned by Nickelodeon to complete paintings of the SpongeBob universe for sale as fine art prints.

Music following the play is by Inya Eeya.
