Composers: Work in progress

Sit inside an intimate winery tasting room Saturday and listen to new musical creations by four of our best local composers. Called "Meet The Composer" and presented by The Nevada County Composers, this salon gives a peek into the creative process, as the composers perform and talk about their works

"Creativity takes on many forms," said Jerry Grant, one of the composers. "But the process is always similar. It begins with a feeling or idea that the composer allows to open as a blossoming flower and take on a shape.

For example, I am working on a piece called 'Santuary,' which combines the recorded sounds of birds, ducks and geese found at the bird santuary with a bed of orchestral sounds."

The composers also include Ludi Hinrichs, Jay Sydeman and Mark Vance. Hinrichs will discuss his musical creation, recently premiered on the NPR documentary, "Saving the Sierra."

Vance crosses over to the dark side with his jazz piece for vibes, flute, bass and drums called "Aquamarine Blue." And Sydeman talks about the tweaking of a virtual orchestra.

The performance is at the Nevada City Winery, 321 Spring St., and it begins at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $20 at the door. Call (530) 478-0983 for reservations.
