Teri Jo Lanoue, a native of Grass Valley, received the Gallagher Scholarship and Bonhamme Scholarship at the University of Montana in Missoula.

She was also inducted in the Golden Key International Honor Society and the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society for academic excellence.

Lanoue is a student of psychology and chemistry. She's been designated a scholar of the College of Arts and Sciences by her dean.

Lanoue's parents Terry Joe and Frankie Slack live in Grass Valley.



Sierra Christian School students who made the third quarter honor roll were:

Fourth grade:

Emerson Helmuth, Rachaiel McKnight, Riley Ballard, Haley Blair

Fifth grade:

Cameron Manchester, Celeste Mazon and Hannah Reinhardt

The Literacy Council of Nevada County needs volunteers to help adults learn English.

The council will offer training for four days at Lyman Gilmore School to those wanting to teach English as a second language.

Once trained, instructors will be matched with students who'd be taught an hour a week.

Training sessions for aspiring teachers will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 26; 5 to 8 p.m. April 28 and April 30; and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 10.

The Literacy Council of Nevada County is a local nonprofit that trains certified tutors and offers English as a Second Language classes for free to adults.

William Jessup University in Rocklin is hosting a college information night from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24 for community members, college-bound students of all grade levels and their parents.

Attendees will have the opportunity to clarify the financial aid process and learn about the educational options available at William Jessup.

William Jessup University is located at 333 Sunset Blvd. in Rocklin.
