Seven Nevada County girls will attend Tech Trek 2008, a summer camp focusing on math, science and computer skills at Stanford University in July.

The seventh-graders were chosen by the Nevada County chapter of the American Association of University Women to attend. They are: Samantha Saccomanno, Forest Charter School; Katherine Magill, Grass Valley Charter School; Lucy Haworth and Samantha Randall, Magnolia School; Katheryn Rein, Seven Hills School; and Emma Lay and Samantha Schultz, Union Hill School.

The girls were honored at an event at the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools office earlier this month for their achievement.

Teachers and administrators nominated the girls for the honor, said Linda Rooney, superintendent of the Pleasant Ridge Union School District. They've been outstanding students for several years, she said.

The girls will travel with their parents to Stanford University to participate in activities specially designed to further their math, science and computer skills, Rooney said.

Community sponsors and members of the Nevada County AAUW made a significant financial commitment for their participation, Rooney added.

Local businesses who sponsored the students include Litton Engineering Laboratories, Telestream Inc., Nevada Irrigation District, Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital and B & C True Value Hardware, said AAUW Carole Gibson.
