Golf for recovery
The people at Community Recovery Resources, the Grass Valley organization that helps addicts get their lives back together with counseling and training in job and life skills, want folks to mark their calendars for Aug. 24.
It's not that far away!
The Seventh Annual Gill Schultz Classic Golf tournament that day will benefit CORR services. It will be held at the Auburn Valley Country Club, in Auburn. For more information, to reserve a space or become a sponsor, call CORR at 273-9541 ext. 220.
Candidate Debate
The League of Women Voters always does a great job lining up public debates for our candidates, and their calendar starts April 30 with a forum for the folks running for California Assembly District 3.
Sue Horne and Dan Logue, both Republicans, will speak from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. that Monday at the Nevada City Veteran's Building, 415 Pine St., Nevada City
Future debates include candidates for Nevada City council, Nevada County Supervisor District 2 and 4th Congressional District. We'll keep you posted on future times and dates.
Great Gift Idea
Reader Brenda English called with a funny story and a great gift idea for the person who has everything.
Her cousin, Tally Hensley (NU grad) and husband Brian Hensley (BR grad) have twins, and on their first birthday last year, instead of gifts, they collected money to sponsor a tiger at the Folsom Zoo.
This year, they'll have the twins' No. 2 party on Saturday, and guests are invited to bring something to send for service men and women in Iraq Ð chapstick, deodorant, beef jerkey, socks and other small, useful items. The children will draw pictures to send, and grown-up guests will pack up everything for mailing.
Meanwhile, the kids will have fun in a bounce house.
"Their theme is the Incredibles, because they think the service people are incredible," Brenda says.
You're not alone
If you have lost a loved one and just can't get it together, you're definitely not alone. Nevada County has a Healing Through Loss and Grief support group that will meet from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. April 29 and again May 6 at FREED Center for Independent Living, 900 E. Main St., Suite 201, in Grass Valley.
Anyone who has lost someone or something important is welcome. Call them at 265-3258.
It can help so much just to talk about your loss to others who have been through the same thing.
