n The Friendship Club has started a College Knowledge program to offer advice about postsecondary education to middle and high school girls it serves.Members of the club recently visited the University of California in Santa Cruz, California State University at Sacramento, Chico, San Jose and Sonoma, Mills College, and Santa Rosa Junior College.The College Knowledge program also provides scholarships to Friendship Club graduates who want to pursue a college education.The mission of Friendship Club is to integrate at-risk girls into the community, teach them important life skills and empower them to complete their education and lead responsible lives.The club has served more than 250 girls since its inception in 1995.

n Bill Douglass, a local jazz musician with Sierra Jazz Society, will teach a jazz workshop from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at his studio in Chicago Park.

The workshop is open to people of all ages, playing all instruments. The cost to attend is $25.

n Sierra College Foundation will present two Chamber Music Alive concerts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Mark's Church in Sacramento and at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Dietrich Theatre on the Sierra College campus in Rocklin. Sunday's concert will feature Andrius Zlabys, a pianist who's performed with the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony and Cleveland Orchestra. Zlabys has also participated in the Menuhin, Salzburg and Lockenhaus music festivals in Europe, and is a 2003 Grammy award nominee.On Sunday, Zlabys will perform pieces from Brahms, Mahler and Shostakovich.For more information or to order tickets, call (916) 789-2920.
