Pleasant Valley and Ready Springs Union School Districts have selected a longtime San Juan Ridge resident as their new joint superintendent.

Debra Sandoval is the superintendent and principal at Alta-Dutch Flat Elementary School District in Placer County. She starts her new position July 1, succeeding Superintendent Jim Voss, who retires June 30.

"I am delighted and very excited," Sandoval said. "I'm impressed with both the school districts. Their No. 1 interest is in providing the best education for every student.

"I think they've hired exceptional staff. There's a great deal of enthusiasm and joy that I sensed among the board members, staff and parents," she said. "I'm looking forward to being a part of their team."

Sandoval has been an educator for 24 years, she added.

"I'm passionate about helping teachers and principals help kids," Sandoval said. "I understand children. I have an inborn love of children. They are our most cherished resource for the future of our country."

Sandoval has been hired on a two-year contract with an annual salary of $108,000, annual health benefits worth $6,898, annual travel allowance of $2,400, and a $5,000 annual incentive if she meets the goals established by the two school districts, said Denise Loberg, president of the board of trustees of the Pleasant Valley School District.

The two districts received 24 applications for the position, said Tina Skrukrud, member of the Pleasant Valley board of trustees and chairwoman of the search committee.

"(Sandoval) seems to have a lot of knowledge and is a lifelong learner," Skrukrud said. "She has a good personality, good community involvement. That's the type of person we were looking for."

"(Sandoval) is a very bright lady, very talented and a very well-rounded person," Loberg added. "She is very approachable, very likable and has a positive demeanor."

Sandoval, 55, started her teaching career at Pliocene Ridge Elementary School near Camptonville, Sandoval said. After 17 years as a teacher and a principal there, she became the superintendent-principal at the Alta-Dutch Flat district. She has lived outside of North San Juan for about 30 years with her husband, Dave Sandoval. They have a son and a daughter and four granddaughters.

Pleasant Valley and Ready Springs Union School Districts are operated through a single district office. The two districts - both in Penn Valley - share the same superintendent and district office staff. Pleasant Valley School District includes William Ranch School and Pleasant Valley School. Ready Springs Union School District consists of Ready Springs School and Vantage Point Charter School.
