The plot of "Last Ditch Idol," running at Off Broadstreet Theater in downtown Nevada City, is simple: Five "over-the-hill" would-be singers compete for the $5000 prize in the fourth annual San Luis Obispo Last Ditch Idol contest, "the event that proves that people over the age of thirty-five still have something to contribute."
This is a fast-paced musical comedy of off-beat humor based on "idol" contests, both local and on TV.
In fact, one of the characters, says theater owner John Driscoll, is a cross between The Brit judge Simon Cowell and Host Ryan Seacrest of American Idol with a little bit of the "smarmy, unctuous host from the movie, 'Little Miss Sunshine'," thrown in for good measure.
The super neat thing about this production is that the audience actually gets to pick the winner each night.
The laughs are plenty, and-as an added bonus-it's suitable for all ages. The comedy runs for two months, starting Friday.
