Greg Heauser was king of the hill and a trio of Miners broke out the bats Thursday afternoon as Nevada Union downed host Del Oro 7-2 for NU's first Sierra Foothill League win of the season.

The win also snapped a five-game losing skid for the Miners.

"We've been on a little bit of losing streak, playing some real good teams in San Diego (in the Lions tournament), so this was huge," said NU coach Ted White. "It's good to get the monkey off our backs a little bit.

"For the kids, I think it was important to get some confidence in knowing we can win some ball games."

Heauser struck out six and walked three, while allowing four hits and two unearned runs. Kyle Caldwell came on in the seventh and shut down Del Oro with a 1-2-3 inning.

At the plate, the Miners were led by Broughan Jantz's 2-for-3 day, while Travis Custer had a two-run double and Tucker Colomb added an RBI double for NU.

Nevada Union (4-6 overall, 1-2 SFL) returns to action at 4 p.m. today, traveling to SFL foe Woodcreek in a game originally scheduled to be played at Nevada Union.

Bear River 7, El Dorado 1

Four Bruins each went 2-for-4 at the plate and Vince Viola helped his own cause on the mound by belting a solo home run, as Bear River beat host El Dorado 7-1 Thursday.

Bear River improved to 4-0 in the Pioneer Valley League with the win.

Viola's blast came in the sixth inning, which also saw a two-run homer from Drew Loftus, as the Bruins took control late.

Loftus was one of four Bruins with multiple hit games. Stephen Hilton, Brendan Casey and Austin French each also were 2-for-4 hitting.

On the mound, Viola struck out eight while spreading eight hits across seven innings in the complete game win. Viola also escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning, with Bear River leading 2-1 at the time. Bear River turned a 4-6-3 double play to end the threat and the inning.

Bear River (9-4 overall) is back in action Monday, traveling to Inderkum for a non-league matchup.
