Fire chief backs fireworks sales on limited basis
Fireworks would be sold only to Grass Valley residents in a plan recommended by Fire Chief Jim Marquis. Grass Valley City Council members could vote on the chief's recommendation at a special 6 p.m. meeting Wednesday. The city's existing policy allows nonprofits to sell fireworks around the Fourth of July to anyone. In the wake of last year's South Lake Tahoe fire, council members decided to review that policy. Many area nonprofits rely on funds from local fireworks sales to hold special events.



No deer here
Carolyn Singer, The Union's garden columnist, has published the second book in her series about deer-proofing your landscape, "Deer in My Garden, Vol. 2: Groundcovers & Edgers," is now available at local bookstores. Singer has gardened in the foothills since 1977.



NID audit results released to public
An audit of the Nevada Irrigation District was released this week and revealed that assets of the district exceeded its liabilities by $314 million and total net assets increased by $1.5 million over 2006.
