The signal!: Did you notice? The signal at Ridge Road and Sierra College Drive is working at full speed and cycling through green, yellow and red - just in time for school to get back into session after the spring break.

But the light at East Main and Sierra College was flashing red on Thursday.

Oh well.

Tri-Ward women: The ladies of the Relief Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently celebrated the 166th anniversary of the organization by gathering together the Grass Valley, Nevada City and Penn Valley wards.

"It was a wonderful evening of dinner, stories and music," wrote reader Jane Flahive.

Breanne Smith, enrichment leader of the Nevada City Ward; Leona Foster, president of the Penn Valley Ward's Relief Society; Second Counselor Karen Rasmussen and relief society Second Counselor Sherron Baker headed up efforts to organize the program, decorate the hall and organize the meal.

Music was offered by Polly Clove, Marsha Conley, John Kline, Blake Smith, Darren Hemberlin and Sally Humpherys. The program examined the stories of Sarah, Esther, Emma Smith and Marjorie Hinkley.

Chuck Chittock, second counselor in the bishopric, cooked the dinner, and the men of the church served the dinner.

Attention golfers: The Nevada County Chernobyl Children's Project is holding a charitable golf tourney, and the deadline for registering your foursome is April 1.

The tourney supports a program to bring children living around the toxic nuclear reactor site to our hills for a few weeks every year. Kids between 8 and 16 years return home tan, refreshed and better able to stay healthy after breathing clean air and eating fresh food, free of radiation.

The tourney will be held June 21 at the Alta Sierra Golf Course and include 18 holes, dinner, raffle prizes and a silent auction. If you register by April 1, it costs $400 per foursome and $500 afterward, so call Krista or Jason at 273-6401.

Wedding tips: If you're planning a wedding or involved in the wedding industry, these events are for you.

Learn about getting the professional photographs, flower arrangements and signature event you have dreamed of or network with people offering their services at gatherings planned for 6 p.m., April 2, and 6 p.m., June 4, in town.

Call Joy of Life Events at 432-4030 to R.S.V.P. and get more info. Organizers include Myrtle & Marjoram in downtown Grass Valley and Nevada City Carriage Co.

Elder abuse: A free legal clinic that explains the financial and physical aspects of elder abuse, how to recognize it and what to do about it will be offered from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., April 3, at the community room of Eskaton Village in Grass Valley.

The clinic will be repeated from noon to 1 p.m., April 4, at the Nevada County Courthouse. D.A. Cliff Newell and Prescott Cole, of the California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform, will be at both.

Call 470-2597 to reserve a seat. It qualifies for one hour of continuing legal education.
