They strut their way across the stage at The Center for the Arts in outfits that make you look twice, not only because lots of skin is showing but because the "fabrics" are so, well, unique: bottle caps strung together in a chain mall, billowing skirts made from plastic shower curtains and bustiers made of heaven knows what. And rubber from inner tubes never looked so good, stretched over a curvaceous body to approximate a biker's miniskirt.
It's the trashionistas of the critically acclaimed "Evening in Paris" from 2006 and "Takin' Out the Trash" from 2007. This year, they are calling their eco chic trash fashion revue "It's Easy Being Green," and their motto is "Changing the world one trashy outfit at a time."
This is haute couture runway fashion of a different kind, perhaps even of the future when we all may have to wear what we can't or shouldn't throw away.
Troupe de Trash is an ensemble production made up of fashion design, performance art and innovation in environmental solutions of the highest order. Forty folks take part, including their larger-than-life Master of Ceremonies John Deaderick. He presides over the two raucous evenings of green fashion, offering an occasional good-natured lascivious leer that goes well with his piquant remarks about each costume.
An evening guaranteed to please the eyes and stretch the imagination, this event is not suitable for children due to its adult nature.
Tickets for the 8 p.m. show Friday and Saturday are $20. They are available only at The Ridge Stop Café in North San Juan and at BriarPatch and The Center for the Arts in Grass Valley. The center is located at 314 W. Main St.
Call the center at (530) 274-8384, ext. 14, noon to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, for more information or go online at www.thecenterforthearts.org.
Troup de Trash's message
Troup de Trash's message is: Think about how you live in this world, be a responsible citizen of the planet, forget your old hang-ups around age and beauty and have some fun while you're at it. And don't forget to:
Rethink today's unhealthy attitudes toward beauty, age, fashion and the environment.
Reduce the amount of pollutants we use in everyday life.
Reuse as much of our daily consumables as possible.
Recycle what can't be reused.
