Hikers in western Nevada County have a couple of useful resources at their fingertips for identifying the many wlldflowers now blooming in the area.
The flowers are especially abundant in the Tahoe National Forest and the South Yuba River State Park.
Nevada City photographer LeeAnn Brook has used her nature photography to create a Web site focused on wildflowers of the Buttermilk Bend trail, at Bridgeport State Park on the South Fork Yuba River. Brook, of Brook Design Group, donated the site to the South Yuba River Citizens League, a local conservation organization.
Go to www.syrcl.org/wildflowers/index.html to find many flowers identified and a map on how to get to Bridgeport. Brook’s 2008 calendars also contain her photography and still can be found at local stores, including SPD Market on Zion Street in Nevada City.
The Redbud Chapter of the California Native Plant Society has published “Wildflowers of Nevada and Placer Counties,” a useful guide that describes flowers, shows full-color photographs and offers commentary on uses by Native Americans and modern landscapers. It also offers directions for other hikes where you can see more flowers.
“Wildflowers” is available at local bookstores and nurseries, including The Bookseller in downtown Grass Valley and Prospector’s Nursery in Nevada City.
