A former county animal control officer faces charges of “misdemeanor annoying or molesting a child under 18” on April 14 in Nevada County Superior Court.

District Attorney Cliff Newell said he filed charges Wednesday against Timothy Mienar, who headed the animal control program when the alleged conduct took place.

Mienar is charged with “misdemeanor annoying or molesting a child under 18,” according to the language of the California Penal Code.

“The maximum consequences is a fine not to exceed $1,000 or imprisonment in the county jail not to exceed one year,” or both, Newell said.

Mienar resigned from his position last week, shortly after the county sheriff’s office started both a criminal and administrative investigation. The administrative investigation stopped at that time, Sheriff Keith Royal said.

A Nevada Union High School ROP teacher confirmed the victim is a girl in her class who volunteered at the county animal shelter.

Mienar is scheduled to be arrainged at 9 a.m. April 14.
