With one fell swoop, Nevada Union scooped up two new coaches Thursday with the consent of the Nevada Joint Union High School District board of trustees.
Dale Latimer, formerly the NU junior varsity basketball coach, was hired as the varsity coach for boys basketball while Chrys Dudek was given the keys to the defending Northern California champion varsity girls volleyball team.
Both coaches come from within the NU family.
Latimer replaces Jeff Dellis who resigned earlier this month, citing family and personal reasons, after the Miners finished 14-13 this season. Latimer coached the Miners' junior varsity and at Bear River and Colfax for the last 14 years.
"Oh yeah," said Latimer with a smile ear-to-ear. "I'm pretty excited. It was a surprise when Jeff stepped down, so it was unexpected. But at the same time I'm real comfortable with the kids and the parents."

Now it's his turn to leave a mark on the program.
"It's gonna take about five years to build the program and so I'm looking at a five-year plan in general. I told (Athletic Director)Steve (Pilcher) that was the minimum I was going to look at.
"In terms of next year, I think we have some talent," Latimer continued. "I think we can be competitive in the (Sierra Foothill League). The SFL is a tough league ... I think we can put a competitive team on the floor. I think it's gonna be pretty exciting. We're going to play man-to-man defensively and we're gonna run passing game and a motion offense, offensively.
"We'll look to attack when it's there and if we have to pull the ball out and grind on people, we can do that, too. I think that the brand of basketball that I'll bring will be fun to watch and rewarding."

Latimer steps in while Dudek, 37, steps up for the Miners' championship volleyball program with 11 years experience as a volleyball coach, most recently at the helm of the Union Hill eighth grade boys and girls programs.
Dudek moved to Nevada County in 2000 after working in Illinois as coach of the junior varsity at St. Charles High School.
"That's where I developed my coaching ability," Dudek said of his experience in Illinois.
Dudek takes over one of the top programs in Northern California. Last fall, the Lady Miners were crowned the Sac-Joaquin Section champions for the sixth straight year and took their third NorCal title in five years.

He knows it will be tough coming in to fill the shoes of former NU coaches Bob Rogers and Larry Petersen.
"The only way to top Bob and Larry is to win state and that's no small feat, said Dudek, who also coached NU's freshman soccer team.
"I look forward to working with the girls."
