Bishop Barry L. Beisner, head of the Episcopal Diocese of Northern California, will confirm, receive and reaffirm members of Emmanuel Episcopal Church at a 5 p.m. service today.

The historic church is at 235 S. Church St. in downtown Grass Valley.

The diocese was created in 1878 and stretches from Solano and Sutter counties to the west and south and to the Oregon border.

The diocese encompasses 79 parishes and missions serving more than 15,000 communicants. Other Episcopal churches in the immediate area are in Nevada City, Auburn, Marysville and Yuba CIty.
