Three local candidates on Thursday filed signatures that offset filing fees.
Alan Kilborn, who is running for Sue Horne's District 2 supervisor seat, collected 202 signatures. Nate Beason, who is running for a second term as District 1 supervisor, collected 76 signatures.
Horne collected 56 signatures. She is seeking to replace Assemblyman Rick Keene in the 3rd Assembly District.
"Candidates have to collect enough signatures to offset fees completely," said Susan German, assistant county clerk recorder.
To offset the fee of $1,162 to file for state Assembly, Horne needed to collect 1,500 signatures from registered Republicans within the district. Each signature is worth 66 cents.
Filing fees for supervisors are $394, and a signature's worth depends on the number of people within each district. Kilborn needed 1,270 signatures at 31 cents each to completely offset fees, while Beason needed 1,320 signatures worth 29 cents for the purpose of the filing.
The elections office now must check the validity of each signature. Candidates will receive notices of any deficiencies within 10 days, upon which the candidates may file supplemental signatures no later than March 7. A candidate's status is provisional until deficiencies in signatures or payments are covered.
The closing deadline for candidates to file is 5 p.m. March 7. If an incumbent does not file, the nomination period for other candidates is extended to March 12.
During the primary election on June 3, voters will cast their vote for Congress, the California Assembly and Senate, Nevada County supervisors in Districts 1, 2 and 5, and for Nevada City Council seats.
Ted Owens is the incumbent supervisor of the county's District 5, in the Truckee area.
