Scofield enters race for supervisor

Nevada County Fair chief executive Ed Scofield is retiring from his post and running for the 2nd District county supervisor seat being vacated by Sue Horne.

Scofield's retirement will be effective December 2008.

"When Laura Duncan dropped out of the race, and I looked at the other candidate (Joehnck), I felt that perhaps I had a more moderate view," said Scofield, 63, a Nevada County native.

He called it a "quick decision" after reading about Joehnck's candidacy in the newspaper last week. Joehnck, a lawyer who has worked closely with the Wolf Creek Community Alliance and Citizens Concerned About Traffic, is a Democrat.

Fellow Fair Board member Jeanette Royal is helping with Scofield's campaign, he said. Royal's husband is county Sheriff Keith Royal.

Scofield is a conservative Republican. In explaining moderate, he said he meant an "ability to relate to more people" rather than a political stance compared with his opponents. He said he wanted to listen to more residents before making any statements about where the county should be headed.

Businessman Alan Kilborn also is running for the 2nd District supervisor seat. He has won Horne's endorsement.

"I know Ed Scofield, and he's a very respectable man," Kilborn said. "If you want to see two people have a clean campaign, that'll be me and Ed Scofield."

Horne is stepping down as supervisor to run for the 3rd District Assembly seat held by Rick Keene (R-Chico).
