North Star Mining Museum, Allison Ranch Road, Grass Valley. Public tours take place from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily. Several travel magazines rate the exhibit as one of the finest in the United States. The former North Star Mine Power House contains the world's largest Pelton wheel, only operational Cornish pump in the world, a working stamp mill, mining dioramas, gold assay office and picnic area at creekside and items dating from the active years of California's richest gold mines. The museum will be open on May 1. 273-4255.

Empire Mine State Historic Park, 10791 E. Empire St., Grass Valley: Open daily 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. now through April 30, 2008. Tours are being given Saturdays and Sundays through February 28, plus February 12 and February 18. There is a mine history film, historical and mineral displays and also miles of hiking trails. Admission: $3 for 17 years and older; $1 children 6-16 years old; children under 6 are free. Park Tours are 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Cottage tours are at 1 p.m. Mine Yard tours are at 2 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays, plus February 12 and February 18. The Cottage tour is a 45 minute walking tour and includes a visit to the estate home of mine owner William Bourn, Jr. The Mine Yard tour is also a 45 minute walking tour that explores the Mine Yard and reveals the history of how gold was processed at the Empire Mine. $3 for 17 years and older; $1 children 6-16; children under 6 are free. Grass Valley Museum/St. Joseph's Cultural Center, 410 S. Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park, located 26 miles NE of Nevada City. Take Highway 49 to Tyler-Foote Crossing Road and drive 16 miles. The park features scenic hydraulic gold mining diggings, historic displays at the old mining town of North Bloomfield, and some of Nevada County's best hiking trails. Miners Foundry Cultural Center, 325 Spring St., Nevada City: Inside the historic foundry building, birthplace of the Pelton wheel, is an interpretive display about the state historic landmark's history manufacturing metal products for the mines and other businesses. Nevada County Courthouse, 201 Church St., Nevada City: The historic, award-winning art deco government building contains several intriguing collections, including a display of rare firearms, the Heritage of Gold Rush era exhibit, state fair trophies and the Wallace M. Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Co. & Transportation Museum, No. 5 Kidder Court, Nevada City: The museum displays a vintage locomotive and antique railroad cars among its artifacts and exhibits. There will be a special open house of the historical Nevada County Narrow Gauge Model Railroad Exhibit, featuring live steam model railroad engines, noon to 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. Searls Historical Library, 214 Church St., Nevada City: The library contains a few historic artifacts, but is an important repository of county genealogical records, maps, photos and information on the people, mines, businesses and residences of the 1850s-present. Staffed by volunteers under the auspices of the Nevada County Historical Society. Open 1-4 p.m. Monday-Saturday. 265-5910.

South Yuba River State Park, Pleasant Valley Road, Penn Valley: The park features the longest single span wood truss bridge in the U.S. which dates to 1862. A special open house and reception will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 24. Meet the Ranger staff and volunteers to learn about programs offered at the park, including: Wildflower Walks, Living History, Gold Panning, Bird Walks, Covered Bridge and Historic Barn Tours and Visitor Center Operations. Event and parking are free and refreshments will be served. Get a mini-class introduction to all the topics. Wildflower walks will be held on Saturdays and Sundays, March 8 through May 11. Meet at 11 a.m. in the north parking lot. The guided walks last about one and a half hours and are free. Wear good walking shoes and carry water. Dogs are not allowed on the walks. A profusion of flowers vary throughout the season on this gentle trail. Group tours may be arranged during the week for a small fee. During the summer months of June, July and August, the Visitor Center opens daily at 11 a.m. and offers exhibits and historic displays. During the winter, the Visitor Center is open Tuesday and Thursday through Sunday at 11 a.m. Park hours are sunrise to sunset with the park gate opening at 10 a.m. Call 432-2546 to speak with a volunteer before stopping by.

Western SkiSport Museum, Donner Summit at the Boreal Ski Area: The museum features the development of western skiing from the California gold miners in 1853 on their 14-foot "downmountain" racing skis to present day Olympians. Vintage ski movies are shown continuously in the Ski Theatre. Other exhibits features Snowshoe Thompson, the legendary skiing mail carrier; and the 10th Mountain Division, famed "ski troopers" of World War II.
