Sue Horne and Dan Logue are locked in a heated campaign finance race as both battle for the GOP nomination for the state Assembly seat expected to be left vacant by Rick Keene.

In the past six months, Horne received more campaign contribution money than Dan Logue for the June primary race.

But Logue still leads in the total money received for all of last year, and he is also receiving some money from long-standing Nevada County Republicans, including Kimberly Janousek of B&C Hardware, Nevada City businessman Lowell Robinson and former county supervisor Robin Southerland, as well as Friends of Sam Aanestad.

Yuba County Supervisor Logue also has received an endorsement from Keene (R-Chico), who is expected to vacate his District 3 seat because of term limits depending on the outcome of Proposition 93 in today's election.

"I'm getting a lot of support from the Republican party (in Nevada County)," Logue said. "It shows me we have a good chance in this primary."

Nevada County Supervisor Horne pointed to her grass-roots campaign fundraising, as well as endorsements from county and city officials. "I've had hundreds of contributions," she said. "My strength on the ground is very strong."

Horne received $86,840 for the period from July through December, compared with $71,947 for Logue for the same period, according to state campaign finance records updated on Friday.

But Logue received $330,434 for January through December of last year, compared with $283,335 for Horne. Horne has loaned $100,000 of her own money to the campaign, as has Logue, according to campaign finance records.

In the latest six-month period, Horne's biggest contributors included $3,600 from the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay nation, California Women's Leadership Association PAC ($1,500), Flyers Transportation of Auburn ($1,600), Bill Lichfield of Grass Valley ($1,000), Hansen Bros. Enterprises of Grass Valley ($1,000), California Land Title Association PAC ($2,000), Legacy Homes of Auburn ($1,000) and Gray Construction of Auburn ($1,000). Horne previously had received another $1,000 from Flyers Transportation during the previous six months of last year.

Horne said she received the contribution from the Indian tribe, because she does not support off-reservation Indian gambling. Tom Dwelle of Flyers is a well-known local GOP contributor.

Horne also received $100 from Robinson & Sons of Nevada City. She previously had received another $1,500 from Robinson & Sons for the period January through June of last year - bringing the total to $1,600.

(This month, Horne joined other county supervisors in approving a deal to relocate the DA's office from the courthouse to new private office space in Nevada City, whose owners include Robinson. But Horne said she had no knowledge of the deal until it appeared in the board meeting agenda packet and had no discussion regarding the lease with Robinson, Gary Tintle or county officials. Tintle has endorsed but not contributed to Horne's campaign.)

Horne also received contributions from her fellow Nevada County supervisors - John Spencer of Grass Valley ($100) and William "Hank" Weston of Penn Valley ($100). She received $500 from Nate Beason's committee in the previous six-month period.

Other contributions included Olympic Mortgage & Investment in Grass Valley ($100), Kathleen Papola of Papola Enterprises in Grass Valley ($100), the Northridge restaurant ($240), Nevada City Engineering ($300), the Nevada County Farm Bureau ($200), Robert Ingram of Sierra Pacific Industries ($100), the Contractors Association of Tahoe-Truckee PAC ($500) and California Land Title Assoc. PAC ($2,000).

The list also includes Molitor Painting Co. of Penn Valley ($500), Peter's Drilling & Pump Service of Grass Valley ($500), Amaral Family Trust ($500), Terence McAteer of Grass Valley ($200), Jennifer Bashall of Nevada County Contractors Assoc. ($100), Cook Commercial Services of Nevada City ($100), BP Landscapes of Grass Valley ($500), Patti Spencer of Grass Valley ($50) and Tru-Line Builders of Grass Valley ($500).

Most of Logue's contributors are from out of the area.

He did, however, receive contributions from Robin Sutherland of Grass Valley ($780), Kimberly Janousek of B&C Hardware in Grass Valley ($240), Gregory Marks ($170), the Parsonage Bed & Breakfast ($280), Robinson & Sons ($1,000) and Gilchrease Family Trust ($105).

"Sue has done a valuable job for the county over the years," said Chuck Shea, owner of the Parsonage in Nevada City. "However, going to the Assembly you need somebody who can sustain the personal attacks. We also have some problems with fiscal conservatism in the county, and we cater to passing minority issues."

Horne said the county was in a strong financial position and defended the board of supervisors' record in tackling local issues.

Logue's biggest contributors for the latest period included Friends of Sam Aanestad ($3,600), JTS Communities of Sacramento ($3,600), Logue Family Trust - Kate Connor Logue ($5,100), AKT Investments ($3,600), AKT Development ($3,600), A. Teichert & Son ($3,600), and Hilbers Inc. of Yuba City ($2,000).
