Nearly 50 boys participated in the Cub Scouts Pack 23 Pinewood Derby Wednesday evening at Deer Creek School in Nevada City. Members of the pack's sponsoring organization, the Nevada City Lions Club, served hot dogs and pizza to about 80 adults and scouts.

Businesses that donated for the event included the S.P.D. Market, Safeway, the 49er Fun Park, Baskin-Robbins ice cream and Larry and Lena's Pizza and Grill.

Scouts and their parents make the cars out of a block of pine, then race on a 60-foot track.
