Trial to begin in kidnapping case

Jury selection for accused kidnapper Charles Sullivan's trial is scheduled to begin this morning.

Nevada County Sheriff's deputies arrested Sullivan Sept. 15 after a woman hitchhiker reported he took her to a remote area near Bowman Lake, tied her up and threatened her with a gun.

He told her he was going to have sex with her, the woman told police.

Investigators said the woman escaped by using her pocket knife to cut the zip-ties binding her feet while Sullivan was away briefly, getting something out of his van.

She flagged down an ATV and was taken by her rescuers to a remote cabin, where she called 911.

Sullivan is charged with attempted rape and kidnapping. Assistant District Attorney Anna Ferguson said the trial is expected to last three days.

Horne, Logue land endorsements

Oroville Police chief Mitchel Brown and Brown's wife, Sue Webber-Brown, have endorsed Nevada County Supervisor Sue Horne for the Republican nomination for the state's 3rd District Assembly seat.

Meanwhile, Yuba County Supervisor Terry Logue has been endorsed by four former leaders of the Nevada County Republican Committee for the same nomination. They include Tony Gilchrease, Dick Marshall, Karen Chileski and Greg Marks.

Horne and Logue are seeking the nomination for the seat being vacated by Rick Keene, R-Chico, because of term limits. Horne and Logue also will face Chico farmer Jack Lee in the June Republican primary to advance to the November general election.
